The main objective of the Board in exercising its powers under the Act is through licensing, to ensure work in the industry is only carried out by adequately trained workers and that they produce safe electrical installations.
The Board investigates and acts on complaints in regard to the carrying out of electrical work, by either licence holders or unlicenced persons.
The main contributors to breaches being forwarded for consideration by the Board are:
- complaints from the public
- active audits by NT WorkSafe Electrical Safety
- and the education of consumers.
The Board maintains a working relationship with licensing bodies in all States/Territories and New Zealand and participates in mutual recognition of licences issued by those bodies.
It is also represented on the Electrical Regulatory Authorities Council (ERAC), a national body that sets the standards for minimum qualifications and requirements for licensing with a view to achieving national uniformity.
Additionally the Board staff participates in a national forum of licensing managers working on uniformity of licensing management practices. The forum meets on a bi-annual basis.
Electrical Workers Licences and Electrical Contractors Licences are issued through the Board. Members of the Board have significant input into the Northern Territory Training Advisory Council representing the Electrotechnology Industry.
| An NT Electrical Workers Licence must be held by persons who carry out electrical work on electrical installations or equipment that operates at voltages in excess of 32 volts alternating current and 115 volts direct current, in the Northern Territory. |
| An NT Electrical Contractors Licence is required where work is contracted for, or carried out for fee or reward, in the Northern Territory. |
